Add Clothing Part 3: Linez and Linez Priority
By Brittney

Let's try adding some of our own linez to the bow from part 2.

For this part, we'll add the ribbon ends to our bow. In order to help me plan out what I want to hex, I'm going to do a quick sketch in photoshop.

Based on this picture, I think I'll need to add 3 add balls for each piece of ribbon for a total of 6. The ribbon end is made of one large ball in the middle with two smaller balls lower and to either side.

It would be good practice to try to create the add balls yourself.

Here are the add balls that I came up with after some trial and error:

;ribbon ends 7-12
0 35, 55,-13 221 55 0 0 -1 5 0
0 -35, 55,-13 221 55 0 0 -1 5 0
0 5, 55,-13 221 55 0 0 -1 5 0
0 -5, 55,-13 221 55 0 0 -1 5 0
0 20, 30,-13 221 55 0 0 -1 15 0
0 -20, 30,-13 221 55 0 0 -1 15 0

The line ';ribbon ends 7-12' will not be read by the program and is for me to use so that I can do my linez more easily.

The last two lines (balls 11 and 12) are the two large balls that are in the middle while the other four balls make up the pointy ribbon bottoms.

Now it is time to do the linez. Recall from part 2 that the center of the bow is add ball 0. We want to connect this to both of the middle balls for the ribbon.

This means we need to add two lines of code in the linez section, one connecting balls 0 and 11 and the other 0 to 12.

0 11 0 -1 244 244 100 100 0
0 12 0 -1 244 244 100 100 0

We also need to connect the middle balls to the pointy bottoms.

7 11 0 -1 244 244 100 100 0
9 11 0 -1 244 244 100 100 0
;
8 12 0 -1 244 244 100 100 0
10 12 0 -1 244 244 100 100 0

Hm, it looks okay but I'm not completely satisfied with the shape of the ribbons. Let's use the starting thickness of the linez to thin out the top of the ribbons.

0 11 0 -1 244 244 60 100 0
0 12 0 -1 244 244 60 100 0

The complete file should look something like this:

And here's the finished bow:

Doing stuff like this can take a long time but don't get discouraged. It just takes a little practice and you will get a feel for it after a while. Try to be patient and work slowly - sometimes I add one add ball or line at a time. If you're familiar with hexing hairstyles, then this should be pretty familiar to you.

Linez that occur earlier in the file are given priority. If the linez are maxed out (which can happen if you put a linez heavy item of clothing on a baby with a complicated hairstyle), the linez at the end of the file are the first to go. You can change which linez are left out by changing the order of linez in the clothing file.

For example, in my original hat file, the tail of the hat was last in the linez section. When I put it on some of my kids, it looks terrible because the tail is not connected and there are huge gaps. By making the tail section of the linez come first, I was able to make the hat work for some of my kids. It's not perfect and other linez are missing, but the gaps are less noticeable.

Now go hex some cute stuff, my kids want more clothes!
