Welcome to the basics of hexing babyz in LNZ Pro

Opening our LNZ

Before we start any kind of hexing, I think it would be appropriate that we all use the same software and will encourage you to all use LNZpro (which can be downloaded from:http://www.sherlocksoftware.org/page.php?id=26 )

I would encourage you to hex from the babyz.rez file rather than an existing baby. All of our tutorials will be hexing from the babyz.rez file.

Firstly open LNZpro and go to 'File' and 'Open'. Change 'Files of Type' to 'All files (*.*)' and go to your C:/Program Files/Mindscape/Babyz/Resource folder and open the file called 'BabyzRez.dll'

There will be a list down the side and each item has a little + next to it. Click on the little + next to LNZ.

The next option that you select depends on what you are hoping to hex.

The Different Sections Explained

Now you will see a lot of words & numbers on the right hand side of the screen, but I'm sure it all looks like gobbledygook right? Here is what all of the different sections mean.

You don’t need to worry about this at all, you wont be using it.

Useful Sections

[256 Eyelid Color] – this changes your babyz eyelid colour (colours are explained in the next section of the tutorial)

[Eyelash Info] – this changes the colour & length of the eyelashes

[Add Ball] – this is where the ballz for your hairstyles will go

[Paint Ballz] – this is where all flat ballz go, for example freckles and rosy cheeks

[Linez] – this is where the linez for your hairstyles go (see advanced hexing tutorials)

[Polygons] – this is where the polygons for your hairstyles go (see advanced hexing tutorials)

[Texture List] – this is where all of your textures go, for example hair bmps and tattoo’s

[Outline Color Override] – this is where your eye colour goes

[Ballz Info] – this is where you can change the skin colour

Understanding Colours

Babyz uses a 256 colour palette, each number referring to a different colour. You can find out what these colours are in LNZ Pro.

When you have selected WG.lnz, then 1033 and have all of the info on the right hand side, look at the top bar of your file. You will see 'insert' and 'tools'. Click on 'insert' then select ball colour:

Then a whole screen of colours will come up. Next you need to select 'babyz' from the drop down list so that you are using the corrext palette:

So, if you want your baby to have blue eyes for example, you might use number 90.

You can also use Carolyn's colour chart as an alternative:

Understanding a Ball

The art to making it in hexing is the ability to change the colours of ballz. Bobbles, eyes, cheeks, freckles ... all these things come from a form of ball...an 'Add Ball' or a 'Paint Ball'.

But to be able to change the colour of a ball, you need to understand the components that make up a ball.

In your WG LNZ find the area that begins:

;HAIR 138
#3.C ;Hair- bald
#2.B;Hair-orange side ponytails

Which is found under the [addballz] section

Each ball takes its orders from a row of numbers:

Example ball

63 65 -60 0 46 244 0 -1 0 2 30 8 0 -1

This is a bobble ball. The first number ... the 63 ... is telling you that the bobble is part of the 'Head'. If you scroll to the bottom of your LNZ file you will see the body part list and number 63 will refer to the Head ... but we are straying from the main point of the section!

------

So if we consider that 63 is center of the universe when it comes to our hair ballz. If you change the three following ballz (in this case the 65, -60 & 0) to all zero's (0, 0, 0) the ball would be right smack in the middle of the head where no one could see it.

We call these numbers the XYZ's because of the axis they adhere to.

The X (65) moves < - > left to right.

The more negative the number, the more towards your left it is. Eg. -50 would be < & 50 would be >

The Y (-60) is up and down.

The more negative the number, the higher the ball. -50 would be ^ and 50 would be v

The Z axis (0) is back and forth.

The more negative the number, the further forward it is (towards you). -50 would be in front of the babyz head and 50 would be behind the babyz head

63 65 -60 0 46 244 0 -1 0 2 30 8 0 -1

The number after your XYZ axis is the number that tells us what colour the ball is going to be. The default bobble colour is 46 which is similar to a dusky pink. If we wanted a green bobble, we might change it to 135.

The 6th number, which is by default a 244 (black) is the outline of the ball. However I will warn you not many people like different coloured outlines on their hair bobbles.

The 7th number, the 0, doesn't appear to do anything so we'll leave it be.

The 8th number, the -1, controls the fuzziness of the bobble. You could change this to a 5 to give the bobble a more textured look similar to scrunchie bobbles. If you were to do this, you should increase the size of the ball, generally.

63 65 -60 0 46 244 0 -1 0 2 30 8 0 -1

The 9th number, which is another 0, can be left as it doesn't do anything magical.

The 10th number, which is a 2, controls the size of the outline, which you can make thicker, or delete altogether by changing it to a -1. We do this when using linez.

The 11th number, which is a 30, controls the overall size of the ball, the bobble by default is size 30 but you can make this bigger or smaller, size 15 makes the ball quite small and very much un-bobble-like. 10 makes it a dot.

63 65 -60 0 46 244 0 -1 0 2 30 8 0 -1

The 12th number, which is 8, relates to the size difference which doesn't need to be changed, so we leave it be!

The 13th number, which is a 0, is another ball which we do not need to touch.

The 14th number, which by default is a -1, adds a texture to the ball. The -1 tells the ball to use the colour we chose before (the dusky pink) and not add a texture. A number (2 for example) would tell the ball to become the bmp which is in the list lower down in the LNZ file (this is discussed later). To use a bmp for a bobble you would change this number to a 2 and add the "address" of the ball in your textures list.

Eye Colour

Scroll down until you find:

We can delete most of this, so that it looks like:

[Outline Color Override]
;Eye color
#1
68, 134
69, 134
##

68 & 69 refer to the 2 different eyes. 134 refers to the colour. We can change this by using a different number. For example if we want brown eyes, we might change the 134 to 208. If we want dichromatic eyes (2 different colours) we might change 68 to 202 and 69 to 178.

Adding Ballz

If we want to add a bobble ball we would copy the bobble line and directly underneath paste it like so:

63 65 -60 0 46 244 0 -1 0 2 30 8 0 -1
63 65 -60 0 46 244 0 -1 0 2 30 8 0 -1

We would then change the axis' to move the ball to where we wanted it.

If we were creating a new hairstyle we would copy a hairball and paste it at the bottom of the hair area:

;HAIR 138
#3.C ;Hair- bald
#2.B;Hair-orange side ponytails
